MEDBURG today: stories of whistleblowers, resistance & activism
Planned event @ The Media Theatre 104 East State Street Media, PA, 19063
In 1971, a small group of ordinary citizens broke into an FBI office in Media, PA - an operation the FBI codenamed MEDBURG – and exposed a sweeping campaign of illegal domestic surveillance. Their actions revealed the existence of COINTELPRO and changed the course of American history. More than 50 years later, their story still resonates.
Join MAC for a special Storyteller’s Night inspired by the MEDBURG case that brings the stories of today’s whistleblowers to the stage. The evening will feature a screening of the film 1971, directed by Johanna Hamilton, followed by live storytelling from those whose lives and work reflect the themes of whistleblowing, activism, and principled resistance.
Featured Storyteller
We are honored to welcome Betty Medsger, the former Washington Post reporter who broke the story of the Media FBI burglary in 1971. Her reporting helped bring the FBI’s secret surveillance activities into public view and sparked a reckoning around civil liberties and government accountability.
Live Storytelling
Following the screening, five storytellers will share personal reflections connected to themes including:
Whistleblowing and ethical courage
Community organizing and grassroots activism
Acts of resistance in pursuit of justice
The role of journalism in a democratic society
Speaking truth to power
Each storyteller will bring a unique perspective, connecting historical events like MEDBURG in 1971 to contemporary questions about accountability and civic engagement.
Why This Matters Now
The burglary took place right here in Media, a good reminder that history is not abstract – it is local. The MEDBURG case continues to prompt reflection about the balance between security and civil liberties and the role citizens play in safeguarding democracy.
