Inspired by a Second Saturday arts event in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, Drew & Heather Arata of Earth & State kept their store open late with live music and refreshments in March 2004. Over the next year, they stayed open almost every Second Saturday along with a few other local businesses. Word continued to spread and more businesses started participating.
M.A.C. saw the potential to build Second Saturday as a wider community arts event. In March 2006, M.A.C. started coordinating 2nd Saturday and partnering with local businesses to provide venues for local artists and musicians, while drawing visitors to Media's fabulous downtown.
M.A.C.'s 2nd Saturday committee coordinates businesses, artists, musicians and volunteers for all aspects of 2nd Saturday, including producing the monthly 2nd Saturday map, publicity, website design, delivering maps & balloons, and graphic design.
As demonstrated on our maps, 2nd Saturday has grown from 14 participating businesses and a handful of artists in March 2006 to over 45 participating businesses and dozens of visual and performing artists this month.
