2nd Saturday/How to Participate/Guidelines
Guidelines:
Except where indicated, these are guidelines; Artists and Businesses must negotiate their own arrangements.
The Artist Registry is the primary source for artwork, live music, and all art forms to be chosen for 2nd Saturday. Using the Artist Registry, M.A.C. will help, when requested, match businesses with artists.
Once a match is made, it is the responsibility of the Artist and Business to coordinate the details.
- For visual arts, this includes: a scheduled setup time, location for art to be hung, exactly how it will be hung (including nails and hangers), duration of exhibit, scheduled breakdown time. The artists should provide any hanging or display supplies needed.
- For musicians, this includes: scheduled set up, performance and breakdown times, placement of tip jar or alternative arrangements, CD & merchandise sales.
- Artists and Businesses should recognize the potential for damage to the property of either (or both) and should determine what, if any, insurance may be available to cover any damage. Neither M.A.C. nor any affiliated agency or individual carries insurance for art displayed at 2nd Saturday.
2nd Saturday is a family-friendly event. If any business or artist knows their content will not be kid-friendly, they must notify us immediately after the placement is made so we can indicate this on the map. Artists or businesses that fail to alert M.A.C. to adult-only content may be barred from future M.A.C. events.
SALES:
Taxes: PA sales tax is 6%, and there is a Media Borough Mercantile Tax of 1%. Artists are responsible for collecting, reporting and paying all state and local taxes on any sales of their work. Artists can check with their accountant to see if the level of their art sales requires them to pay sales tax.
Sale of artwork: General Consignment Terms are 60% to artist, 40% to gallery. Some businesses do not take a percentage of sales, as artists draw people to the businesses. Negotiation of terms is entirely the responsibility of the artists and businesses, and should be established in writing prior to leaving any works with a business. Artists should create a receipt for the business to sign itemizing what artwork is left, and for how long.
No sales should be made on the sidewalk. All sales in Media must be through a licensed business. Sales made on the sidewalk are unlawful and can result in penalties and fines. Artists making such sales may be barred from participation in future M.A.C. events.
Businesses should be made aware of all sales: As a courtesy, each business should be informed of all sales at the end of the evening, if they are not handling the transactions.
Payment to musicians: Most businesses do not pay the musicians, but we request that they prominently place a tip jar for the musicians, and that they do not take a percentage of CD sales. Musicians also benefit from the exposure and publicity. Artists and businesses should clarify their expectations prior to the event.
MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES:
Volume: We encourage acoustic music. Electronic amplification is allowed, but the volume must be respectful to neighboring businesses, musicians, patrons and audiences. Media Borough has zoning ordinances which limit noise levels. Artists who violate these ordinances may be asked to cease immediately, or may be barred from participation in future M.A.C. events.
Short sets: We also request that any performances be in short sets, to allow people to circulate among many locations and experience other performers. One model is to schedule 2 performances, 30 minutes on and 15 minutes off; another is to schedule just one set no longer than 45 minutes. Artists and businesses should clarify their expectations prior to the event.
PUBLICITY:
We encourage artists and businesses to supplement the advertising and publicity done by M.A.C., but you must mention that your event is a part of Media’s 2nd Saturday using the following description:
“This is part of Media's Second Saturday, where over 40 businesses along State Street in Media, PA host artists and musicians from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on the Second Saturday of every month. For more information, visit www.mediaartscouncil.org.”
- Please cc our Business Coordinator on any press releases that you issue.
