What is Fair Trade?

Quite simply, Fair Trade is a tool for reducing poverty in developing nations. It is a form of trade that pays producers of coffee, tea, fresh fruits and other products a fair price and provides markets for those goods. It raises the standard of living for over one million Fair Trade farming families throughout the world allowing children to go to school and not work in the fields. A rigorous third party certification by TransFair USA guarantees consumers that stringent criteria are met.

Fair Trade Certified products are top quality, grown in ways that protect and restore land, and, wherever possible, grown organically. The Fair Trade logo lets consumers know that a product is Fair Trade Certified. Another label to look for is that of the Fair Trade Federation. Its members offer food products and crafts, clothing, housewares, and many other products sourced under fair trade conditions.

For more information on Fair Trade, and what it means to be a Fair Trade Town, go to www.visitmediapa.com/fairtrade.

What is Buy Local?

Buy Local is about supporting local growers/artisans/producers in order to strengthen local economies and to significantly lower costs of transport to consumers and to the environment. While Fair Trade produces goods that we don’t produce locally, Buy Local does the opposite, and hence the two movements are complementary.

Prizes:

Each winner will receive great Fair Trade items, from coffee and chocolate to crafts, soccer balls and more!

The winner in the Professional category will win $100 in addition to Fair Trade items.
