Taking photos in the 70s, I learned darkroom work, and the basics of developing.
At University of the Arts, I learned, in far greater detail, the arts of shooting, developing, printing. Since then, I have sidled into graphic design, which is where I hang my hat during the day. But I have continued taking photographs--about 35 years worth. My early work was primarily families and children--precious, chaotic moments that happen in any home with children. More recently, I have been enraptured by geology--the immensity, the timeless timeframe, the changes.
My design work takes shape at SIAM (Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics), www.siam.org. Two pieces hang at the National Science Foundation in Washington, D.C.; book cover designs for higher mathematics books are seen, unfortunately, by only a very small audience. SIAM projects have won In-House Designer Awards from Graphic Design USA for 7 consecutive years.
I hold a BFA in Photography from University of the Arts in Philadelphia, and a Masters in Journalism from Temple University.
My own site is www.birchdesignassociates.com
When not photographing, designing books, logos, or posters, I sing. Or garden. Or deliver food to the homeless.
